E-mail lists I own

Sometime along 'bout 1995 (it's been a busy time - the exact date escapes me) I was subscribed to ROOTS-L and then along came KYROOTS.

Suddenly there was a "need" for state level lists. In a lot of ways it made sense, because you could focus your search, but there was concern that there would be too many duplicate messages and too much traffic as people subscribed to every list that was available.

I decided the need was real and started INROOTS, TNROOTS, and VA/WVA-ROOTS. Other lists followed until North America was blanketed.

About a year later people decided they wanted to focus their searches on a family, instead of a region, and so the family lists were started. That was soon followed by smaller regions, such as West Texas. Along the way some other non-genealogical lists were started, too.

By May, 1997 over 1,300 lists were running on the mail server in my office. Then we were hit by a spammer. He sent tens of thousands of messages through my server, not once but several times. Because the software I was using had inadequate security, I had no choice but to shut down the system.

Luckily for the 200+ list owners, the Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson stepped forward and offered to change the lists-for-a-fee policy at rootsweb and give all the lists a home.

Most of the lists, including my family lists, moved there in late May, 1997. The regional lists I kept at I.U. and put on listserv.

I call these "my" lists because I maintain them. Actually, they belong to the subscribers, because they are the ones who use them and benefit from them. Without them, there would be no lists.

ARCHIVES

The list archives from the pre-listserv/rootsweb days are not lost, but they are not yet available. I'm still working on those.

To see the listserv (regional, etc.) archives, go to I.U.'s archive page.

For a good primer on searching archives, go to this page.

You can also get the official guide to searching the archives database by sending GET LISTDB MEMO to listserv@listserv.indiana.edu (although the web link above is the best way to search them).

Other links

There are many links to other lists. One list you should consider is a relatively new effort to form an Internet International Genealogical Society. Join the list (put subscribe in the body of your message) and learn what it's all about.

GEN-NYS-L (another New York list; put SUBSCRIBE in the message)

KANSAS-L (SUB KANSAS-L - this is primarily history.)

KS-KIN-L (SUB KS-KIN-L Your Name - this is for genealogy.)

KYROOTS (SUB KYROOTS Your Name)

For Native American links, check here and here.

NDSDMN-L (The Dakotas and Minnesota; put SUBSCRIBE in the subject)

NEBRROOTS (SUB NEBRROOTS Your Name - another Nebraska list)

VA-ROOTS (SUB VA-ROOTS Your Name - another list for Virginia [only])

Be sure to visit John Fuller's page. It has hundreds (thousands?) of lists named there for genealogists. He and I worked together (and now he and Karen at rootsweb) to track all the lists that get started. Another place to look is here.

Perhaps the most extensive listing I've ever seen is Cyndi Howell's page. Be sure to check it out!

Also, check rootsweb's listings for all they have to offer.

A site to match counties with cities is here.

For you Indiana searchers, you can find addresses and information on county health departments here.

Below is a list of genealogy related sites. This was not put together by me, so credit goes to others (I'm just not sure who). I haven't checked all of them. Let me know if you find any problems.
