Fall 2011 A project led by my colleague - Professor Rebecca Barthelmie
(also of IU) was funded by DoE. This project is focussed on
integration of data from a variety of platforms used to make wind and
turbulence measurements. In the project observations from ground-based remote sensing measurements (including multiple vertical and scanning lidar
systems), an Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle (UAV), a tethered balloon,
meteorological towers and satellite-borne radiometers
will be integrated to examine
horizontal/vertical gradients of both wind speed and turbulence at
high temporal and spatial resolution. Read more.
Summer 2011 I received a new grant from NSF from a project entitled Up-scaling from leaf to canopy the
aerosol-sized particle collection mechanism within a non-uniform
canopy medium.
The project is a collaboration between myself
and Gabriel Katul of Duke
University. The total award is for approximately $760,000 with
$568,088 coming to IUB.
Some of the experimental research will be conducted in a purpose build
chamber to be located in the Multi-disciplinary Science Building II,
the field research will be conducted at the IU AmeriFlux tower in
Morgan-Monroe State Forest, in the Manitou Experimental Forest (MEF)
in Colorado.
Summer 2011 Professor Rebecca Barthelmie and I received funding from NSF Engineering Division for a new project Multiple wake interactions in large
wind farms
Summer 2011 We received funding for a project focussed on understanding methane sources/sinks in Greenland. Provost Professor and Chair of the Geological Sciences Department Lisa Pratt is the leader on this $2.4 million NASA project
Spring 2011 I was
appointed
associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs at IU
Bloomington.
Spring 2011
My co-author (Professor R.J. Barthelmie) and I published a paper
entitled 'Assessing climate change impacts on the near-term stability
of the wind energy resource over the USA' in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences. This paper reports our analyses that show that
at least in the next 30-50 years the wind resource in the Central
Plains (the region of highest wind energy penetration and resource) is relatively stable.
Here is the NSF press release.
Here is a discussion of the work in Science News..

Spring 2011
I was appointed to the the National Climate Assessment and Development Committee (NCADAC). This committee has been established as a Federal
Advisory Committee under the Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Fall 2010
With my colleagues Rebecca Barthelmie (IU) and Justin Schoof (SIU) I
received a new grant from the National Science Foundation - "Climate
change impacts on regional wind climates". Click here for a short
description
Fall 2010
I hosted the workshop Workshop on Climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation in the Midwest
(October 2010).

Fall 2010
I co-chaired a themester seminar series with Gerhard Glomm of
economics on Climate Change: Scientific Basis, Adaptation and
Mitigation Strategies
.

Spring 2010
I was named Provost Professor. Here is the announcement from IU
news.
Here I am at the
reception on 4 November 2010 with
Thomas Gieryn (Vice Provost for
Faculty and Academic Affairs).
Spring 2010
Indiana University and Purdue University hosted a Wind energy in Indiana workshop (hosts Professors R.J. Bathelmie (IU) and Doug Adams (Purdue).
Here I am giving my presentation.
Spring 2010
I gave a keynote address at the International Atomic Energy Authority
meeting on Vulnerability of Energy Systems to Climate Change and
Extreme Events.
Spring 2009: I joined the editorial board of
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres , and will become an Editor for the period 2010-2013.
2009-2010: I was a contributing
author for the IPCC special report on the role of renewables in
climate change mitigation (SRREN)
Spring 2009: I became an ALP fellow for the academic year 2009-2010. The Academic Leadership Program (ALP) is sponsored by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). ALP offers professional development
opportunities for those who may wish to pursue administrative careers or other positions of academic leadership.
I am editor of a book
that was published in Spring 2009 entitled:
Understanding climate change: Climate variability, predictability and
change in the Midwestern USA
The book is a comprehensive assessment of change over last 100 years &
projections for C21st with a focus on four 'parameters';
(i) Thermal regimes,
(ii) Hydrologic regimes,
(iii) Flow regimes (winds and synoptic scale phenomena)
(iv) Severe weather
It is a product of the MAGIC consortium (Midwest Assessment Group for
Investigations of Climate) and comprises 24 chapters with 33
contributing authors from 13 Midwestern institutions.

Atmospheric chemistry research: In May 2008 we conducted a large experiment at our forest site as part
of a research project funded by NSF (Pryor, Barthelmie, Hopke, Mauldin
and Westberg). IU communications produced a video that describes (in
part) that experiment (NIFTy - Nucleation In ForesTs).

The committee is comprised of 40 climate scientists from across the USA, along with 13 ex-officio members drawn from federal agencies. The
objectives and scope of the committee activities include (but are not limited to) integration, evaluation and interpretation of climate science
projections and the likely impacts of climate change across the USA.
