Fall Tutoring Available for Organic Chemistry!

Our local ACS section is hosting a organic chemistry tutor on Sunday and Tuesday nights from 6:45-9:45 PM in the Chemistry Resource Center, C046 through December 10. We have found that our students have ample access to support at general chemistry level, but our students can benefit from having extra outside attention for the organic classes as well. Thus far, the organic tutor support has been well utilized by the organic chemistry students at IU!

Free Tutoring available for High School Chemistry Students!

The Student Affiliates chapter has compiled over 2 dozen tutors who want to work with high school students in need.  Please view our website to find help for you!

October 20 Chemistry Open House for National Chemistry Week

NCW-2007 Theme: "The Many Faces of Chemistry ", 9 AM - 1 PM, Chemistry Building, First floor
National Chemistry Week is an annual event that unites ACS local section, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. SISACS and the Chemistry Department at Indiana University will host an open house for the community on Saturday, October 20. Please contact our NCW coordinator, Desiree Henricksen , if you would like to have your school participate in any of our events. Events include the Harry Potter chemistry room, the Haunted Laboratory, culminating in our a Magic Show (10 am & noon in C122).

Libby Swanger demonstrates "Flu Powder" in the Harry Potter Laboratory. Chris Than catches a dollar bill on fire, but due to the "potion" that was on it, it was unharmed.

The audience went wild when James Clark threw some liquid nitrogen on to the floor of the lecture hall. Professor Peters and Gary Cooper demonstrated luminescence to the audience.

James Clark pouring the same liquid into different containers and getting different colors each time. Professor Peters wows the crowd with flames at the end of his magic show.

Loren Rector stands in front of the bubbling chemicals in the resource room. Copper pennies being "transformed" into gold pennies inside the Haunted Laboratory.

July/August

Summer Enrichment Program, July 22-27, 2007 - We are looking for volunteers to help with this summer's events. Come and volunteer with the working with 9th and 10th graders who learn what it means to be a scientist. Everyone has a good time!

The Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is an exciting opportunity for Indiana minority high school students to broaden their horizons in Science.  Whether interested in learning more about genetics, evolution, environmental and molecular biology, plant sciences, or a host of other scientific focuses, attending the Summer Enrichment Program offers not only lectures and discussions, but also hands-on laboratory experiences.  Led by a dynamic and skilled team of Indiana University faculty members and Indiana high school teachers, students take with them more knowledge of various scientific careers as well as advanced preparation and expectation for a successful and fulfilling collegiate experience

Chemistry Events:

TUESDAY, JULY 24, Chemistry Lecture – Diabetes “Biotechnology: A Source of Important New Medicines” Prof. Richard DiMarchi, Chemistry Chair, Jordan Hall A100, 1:15-2:15 pm.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, Tour at Cook, Incoporated - 9:00 am - 2:30 pm, meet at Wright Quad to catch the bus - be early rather than late!

January/February

February is Food Drive Month - Hoosier Hills Food Bank Canned Food Drive – It's that time again to partner up with the Hoosier Hills Food Bank to collect, stores, and distributes nutritious food products to non-profit organizations, which provide free feeding programs that serve both ill and needy families and individuals in Monroe, Martin, Owen, Orange, Brown, and Lawrence Counties in Central Indiana. Since opening in 1983, over 15 million pounds of food have been distributed and since 1995, the Meal Share Program has distributed over 300,000 healthy meals to members of the community. Our SAACS students have placed barrels in the dorms or other public locations on campus to collect canned foods in the last week of March. If you have food you wish to drop off, please stop by our Chemsitry Undergrdaute Office, C021, or call Kate Reck (855-3972) for pick up.

February 22, 4-6 PM – It's your favorite “Feb-brew-ary” Beer Exploration!  Last year, it was a hit, so join us again at a beer tasting while we discuss the types of international beers and how they are produced differently.  Please find us in the Indiana Memorial Union, upstairs in the University Club.  Parking is available in the IMU parking lot; parking validation is provided for ACS members. For more information, please contact Kate Reck (855-3972).

February 8, 2007, 4:00 PM, Special Seminar: Chemists Have Solutions, Chemistry C122  Please mark your calendar for the seminar noted below and also plan to attend the Round-table and one-on-one meetings with Dr. Ken Miller, an experienced industrial chemistry with years of experience recruiting and hiring students like you! Not only does he have valuable experience to share, he is extremely kind. You should not miss this opportunity to receive expert and gentle career coaching.

This seminar will address some examples of how chemists and material scientists are applying problem-solving skills to some big global challenges. This list of challenges includes: potable water shortages, green house gases, 1000s of vehicle fatalities per day, a world wide energy crisis, affordable health care, global security…. These have become not only the headlines of today, but also the scientific, industry and career challenges of this century. We will also examine how industry is redefining its vision of how to bring value and to grow by addressing these challenges.

Biographical Information for Ken Miller:

Ken Miller is a 1978 graduate of Indiana University where he received a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry working under the direction of Professor Rupert Wentworth. After two years of post-doctoral work at the Charles Kettering Research Lab on small molecule models for nitrogen fixation he joined GE in 1980 as an Advanced Development Chemist. During his 25 career at GE, Ken has conducted research in the field of material science and has been a General Manager of Research and Development in several businesses since 1991. He is currently the Global Research Manager for Crystalline Technology and leads research teams in the US, Europe, India, China and Japan.
