Introduction
* The principal aims of these assignments are: * to extend the course using latest data on oceanographic and atmospheric conditions. * to explore specific topics to enhance understanding of that aspect of the course. * They require answers to specific questions based on: * examination and interpretation of data retrieved from designated internet sites. * calculations of parameters or rates of processes from available data. * written explanations or assessments of oceanographic phenomena. * integration of material from different course topics. * Direct restatement of the contents of source materials is inappropriate. * The data sets posted on the internet are: * provided and updated by government agencies (e.g. NASA, NOAA, USGS, Coast Guard). * the product of research activities at universities or oceanographic centers. * often derived from satellite images, using processing methods invisible to the viewer. * Each exercise will be: * discussed and illustrated in the relevant class session. * accessible as a website with links to the target sites, supplemented by guidelines. * considered in detail and worked through during optional help sessions. * The exercise topics and their dates of issue, due dates, and late dates are as follows:

with Assignments
* The Instructor, Simon Brassell, will offer assistance with any aspect of the course: * during posted office hours (Mon and Wed 1:20-2:30pm), or by arrangement. * by email: simon@indiana.edu * Help sessions for each exercise will be held during the week before their due date: * i.e. sometime (probably in early evening) during Jan 31 - Feb 4 for Exercise 1. * the timing of these optional sessions will be arranged in January based on: - attempts to optimize availability to students from questionnaire responses. - availability of room GY126. |
