Introduction
  *  The principal aims of these assignments are:
  to extend the course using latest data on oceanographic and atmospheric conditions. 
  to explore specific topics to enhance understanding of that aspect of the course.
  * They require answers to specific questions based on:
  examination and interpretation of data retrieved from designated internet sites. 
  calculations of parameters or rates of processes from available data.
  written explanations or assessments of oceanographic phenomena.
  integration of material from different course topics.
  *  Direct restatement of the contents of source materials is inappropriate.
  *  The data sets posted on the internet are:
  provided and updated by government agencies (e.g. NASA, NOAA, USGS, Coast Guard).
  the product of research activities at universities or oceanographic centers.
  often derived from satellite images, using  processing methods invisible to the viewer. 
  *  Each exercise will be:
  discussed and illustrated in the relevant class session.
  accessible as a website with links to the target sites, supplemented by guidelines.
