Examinations
* The written examinations are intended to: * test general comprehension of course topics and themes. * examine understanding of oceanographic terms and the principles of oceanic phenomena. * address knowledge of critical physical, chemical and biological processes in the ocean. * explore comprehension of interactions between the geosphere and atmosphere. * evaluate abilities to describe and interpret key issues and characteristics using diagrams. * assess use of maps to demonstrate geographical extant of oceanographic features. Examination Schedule The three written exams (all closed book) will be based on the following materials and held at the dates and times shown:
* Late arrivals will not be allowed extra time to finish exams. Examination Format: * Each exam will consist of two different types of question: short-answer and multiple choice * Each exam will consist of two parts: (i) multiple part, short answer questions worth 15 points (+ 2 pt bonus available) * many of these questions will require discussion and interpretation of diagrams. * a choice of questions will be offered. * answers require explanation, description or evaluation of oceanographic processes (ii) multiple choice questions worth 3 points (1 point for partially correct answers). * answers require knowledge of oceanographic characteristics, concepts and terminology * Examples of questions and model answers will be distributed prior to the first exam.
* Both exams #1 and #2 last 40 minutes and have similar numbers of questions * The final 2-hour exam has proportionately more questions (see below). Examination Questions The number of the different types of questions, their assigned points and the opportunity for bonus points in each of the exams are as follows:
The final exam is scored out of 150; the maximum points total for this exam is 175. |

Sessions
* There will be reviews of major themes prior to each exam which will: * revise and review critical themes and oceanographic concepts. * provide additional opportunities to revisit and clarify course contents. * address relationships and connections between different topics. * discuss the format of the examinations. * demonstrate how to approach both types of questions. * work through representative examples of questions. * indicate the level of detail required for answers. * illustrate effective, simple diagrams to represent oceanographic processes. * The review sessions are scheduled for: * Friday February 18, prior to Exam #1 on Monday, February 21. * Friday March 26, prior to Exam #1 on Monday, March 29. * Mon. April 26, Wed. April 28, and Fri. April 30 prior to Final on Wed. May 3. |
