This introductory science course focuses on exploration of the marine realm.  It incorporates aspects of geology, geography, physics, chemistry and biology in an interdisciplinary approach to the oceanography, with an emphasis on the climatic and environmental importance of the oceans.

Sequence of Themes & Topics:
   *  Geographical and geological framework of the oceans: shape, size and history of exploration.
   *  Constituents of the oceans: sea floor sediments, seawater and salts.
   *  Atmosphere/ocean interactions: gases, global climate, winds, hurricanes, El Niño events.
   *  Dynamic processes in the oceans: circulation, currents, waves, tsunami and tides.
   *  Fringes of the ocean: coastal waters, estuaries, shorelines, beaches and erosion.
   *  Biological oceanography: organisms and ecosystems in coastal, shallow and deep waters.
   *  Oceans and environmental issues: global warming, pollution, toxins and marine resources.
Course Format: Text, Lectures, Assignments & Exams:
