Course Requirements & Grading:
- Midterm exam
(25%)
- Course assignment (25%)
- Final: take-home exam (30%)
- Demonstrated
progress in the readings (i.e., contribution to class discussions and brief response papers) (20%).
- Graduate students will write a term paper - as their course assignment -
to be decided in consultation with the instructor.
- Course Assignment will be decided upon in
consultation with the instructor: book review, comparison of two narratives,
analysis of travel writing as literary genre (with relevance to our course),
review of secondary literature on a work or a period, likeness and contradiction
between European travel narratives and non-European ones, etc. Additional
ideas may be considered. Another option that would count as the course assignment,
would be to present a relevant source, or a group of sources in class, and
lead a discussion about them.
