SPANFORMA Program for Spectral Analysis of Sound by James Halliday What is Spanform?Spanform is short for 'SPectral ANalysis FOR Musicians'. The program will analyze almost any uncompressed WAV file, creating an analysis file which displays a picture of the sound, with time in the horizontal dimension and frequency (pitch) in the vertical dimension. The focus in Spanform is on the analysis file, and on the variety of ways in which it can be displayed. Who can benefit from this program? As the name implies, Spanform is designed for musicians, but others should find it useful. It is extremely easy to use, and requires no technical mathematical knowledge. Engineers and other math-types should find the program customizable enough to work for them as well. Anyone who is interested in 'seeing' sound in a new way could benefit from this program. What do I need to run the program?Spanform requires only a Windows operating system (95 or greater), and some WAV files as input. A sound card is necessary to use the audio functions of the program, of course, but it's not absolutely necessary. Spanform is freeware, so download it, and share it! January 30, 2005 - Spanform is now over 4 years old! Someday I may rewrite the whole thing, but for now I'm just in awe of how much faster it runs than when I wrote it! Also see FFTExport, which is a java-based program which produces analysis files that are plain-text. Please send me some mail about Spanform.
