Huh?
Hello. I am Mike Chary, and this document is my home on the world wide web,
such as it is. To be honest, I am not entirely certain why I need, want, or
even have a home page, but what the heck? Besides, given the growth of the
internet and the number of articles and tv spots I have seen about
"cyberspace," this page might be considered my acquiescence towards
society's standards of "hip." As with all webpages, this is a work in
progress, changing as I add more material, so if a specific link doesn't
work, please try again later.
Well, okay, maybe one reason
If one has a home page, and one puts links to one's favorite sites on
it, one doesn't have to scroll through bookmarks looking for those sites
:)
Oh, some links on this page lead to texts written in Latin. If you don't
know Latin, you might start to get annoyed at that point. However, if
you'd like to learn, I have located a site which can get you
started.
Rhetoric
I like logic. It makes me happy when people make sense. It makes me sad
when intelligent people try to make a coherent point and fail
miserably. I am arrogant scum. :) :) Anyway, I have found a number of
sites which are dedicated to informal logic. Nizkor Feature:
Fallacies is the most fun.
The Military Industrial Complex
Remember those guys Ike warned us about? Well, you can find their
grocery list at Jane's Electronic
Information System.
What do you look like?
This is me.
Who are you?
An intriguing question if you are of a philosophical bent. I am not very
interesting really, but I do have interests which might indicate something
of my personality. Here are a few of them:
My buddies
It is said that a man is defined by his friends. While I doubt any of
mine would want that responsibility, several of my friends have websites that are worthwhile.
Roger Bacon
My favorite philosopher is Roger Bacon, alleged sorceror and inventor of
the scientific method. I'll probably get around to setting up a page for
him eventually, but I simply haven't had the time. There's a historical
novel by James Blish devoted to him, _Doctor_ Mirabilis_ it's
called. Most of his stuff has never been translated into English which
is another thing I want to get around to sooner or later. However, that
doesn't help you, what might, if you want to try to find out more are
these:
Search Engines
These are some of my favorite web search engines. If you want to find
something, odds are that one of these sites will be able to help you:
So if anything in my little version of reality sparked your interest, those
places can help you find out more :)
The Internet
The World Wide Web is only a part of the Internet. The Internet is not a
chaotic morass. There are certain definite accepted standards. Many of
these standards are catalogued at Internet
Request for Comments(RFC). If you are new to the net or a marginally
experienced user trying to take the next step toward true expertise, I
encourage you to take a look.
Usenet is a mass of discussion groups. This link will take you to one of
several sites documenting Usenet History.
If you are interested specifically in the World Wide Web and its
intricacies, I recommend taking a look at The World Wide Web Consortium home
page. Also, Thomas Boutell
is a web guru who maintains the Frequently Asked Questions list
regarding the web for Usenet.
Finally, if you are looking for page construction tips, Thalia's guide for
WWW-providers is an excellent place to look for ideas. Especially of
note is their color compostion engine. If you want to put together a
color combination for your web page, this is a place to look.
And, in the end, there can be only one.
