Educational Background

Ph.D. University of Illinois (1973)

M.S. Indiana University (1965)

B.A. Union College (1963)

Research/Scholarship

My research has primarily focused upon social psychological aspects of therapeutic recreation and upon professional preparation in therapeutic recreation. Representative of my social psychological research have been studies on attitudes toward serving persons with disabilities and staff burnout. I have conducted a number of studies related to undergraduate and graduate curricular concerns in TR. I am the author of Therapeutic Recreation Processes and Techniques (4th edition) and the co-author of Inclusive and Special Recreation: Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (3rd edition) and Therapeutic Recreation: An Introduction (2nd edition).

Teaching

I began my teaching career in the 1970's at the University of Illinois while earning my Ph.D. After all these years, I still enjoy teaching a great deal. It has been my pleasure to receive Indiana University's highest teaching award, the Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award for Distinguished Teaching. I have also been recognized by the Society of Park and Recreation Educators, having received their Award for Teaching Excellence.

Service

My service activities have included serving on boards of national professional societies, including NTRS, SPRE and ATRA (of which I am a founding member). I am a past-president of SPRE and ATRA and a past member of the NRPA Board of Trustees. I have served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Leisure Research, Schole, Annual in Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Today. I am a member of The Academy of Leisure Sciences.

Publications

In addition to my textbook writing, I have authored over 100 articles in professional and scholarly journals including Therapeutic Recreation Journal, Annual in Therapeutic Recreation, The Gerontologist, Leisure Today, and The Journal of Parks and Recreation Administration. In 1998, I received the NRPA National Literary Award.
