Course Overview

Text:  We will cover all of Elementary Geometry for Teachers (Parker and Baldridge), using supplementary material from the Singapore elementary school curriculum. We'll be going at a rate of about one section per day.

Equipment:  Please bring a ruler, protractor, and compass to class.  You won't need them every day, but we will use them often.

Exams:  There will be one exam at the start of each month, beginning in February.  There will also be a cumulative final in May.

Classwork:  There will be classwork to hand in almost every day.  I will try to get it back to you at the next class.  Scores will be posted on the Oncourse gradebook.  Check that out occasionally to make sure we have recorded everything correctly.

Extra Help is available at the Academic Support Centers at Briscoe, Ashton, and Forest, which are open Sunday  through Thursday evenings, 7pm till 11pm.  Also feel free to take advantage of my office hours (see times at the top of the page).

Grading:  Classwork will count 20%,  exams 20% each, and the final counts 20%.   If it helps your  final average I will use the "Hail Mary" play: we can count your final twice and drop one of your earlier exams (or the homework, but you should do well on the homework!).   I use the grade scale: 97%=A+, 92%=A, 90%=A-, 87%=B+, 82%=B, 80%=B-, etc.

Good Luck!

Supplementary Files

Here are some Geometer's Sketchpad files of 3-D figures which
partially allow you to turn the figure and see it from more than one viewpoint.  Note that one of the points in the figure is blue (rather than red); that point can be moved (in a circular orbit) to spin the figure around.   Octahedron; tetrahedron; cube.  And here is a triangular prism drawn in 1-point perspective; of course you can move the vanishing point around.

Here is the key for the third exam from Fall 2005: page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4.
